Bethany W. Gates

My name is Bethany W. Gates. I’m a storyteller, writer and an observer of human nature. Like my initials and cultural background, my creative nonfiction is black, white and gray.

Black. The dark side that hides in the shadows. Thoughts, feelings and emotions that make up the human condition.

White. The light side that observes the humor. Cheeky moments that make life worth living and stories worth telling.

Gray. Gray is where the black and white blend together. Nuance stories with an intention of creating unity and inclusion*.

While the *definition of inclusion is the action or state of including or of being included within a group or structure, the intention of this word, in this context, expands into respect.

Readers with different experiences and points of view are appreciated when accompanied with respect.

Acceptance and common courtesy of others, regardless of race, religion, creed, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, political affiliation, etc. seems to be in short supply.

Regardless if my story is pretty, ugly, comical, thrilling or terrifying, it’s always rooted in the black, white and gray.
